THE SILENT INTERIOR
is a series of charcoal drawings
that Lars Staffan Evjen has been
working on since 1994. In July
2006, the series encompasses
some 160 works.
The technique
is charcoal and black chalk on
paper or card. The format varies
from 5x4 cm to 130x220 cm. All
the drawingsup to 2006 describe
a Spartan interior. There is always
a dark, open doorway, and frequently
a white object – a kind of box
suggestive of a cupboard. Once in a
while we find unexpected things:
shadows or marks on the walls,
something appearing in the doorway,
traces of something that has happened.
But in general, it is the empty surfaces
and the silence that dominates,
accompanied by the associations
givenby darknessand light.
Drawings
from this series have been shown at a
number
of major exhibition venues in
Norway and purchased some of the
most notable art collections.
